Library Programming Benefits from Fall Book Sale October 7 & 8
As a loyal Friend of the Val Verde County Library, I am devoting my column to them and their semi-annual book sales – in October and April. Donations received at these “sales” subsidize the library’s programming expenses for kids, teens, and adults throughout the year.
Friends of the Val Verde County Library Fall Book Sale is Friday, October 7, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Plaza Del Sol Mall. That’s seventeen hours of joy for bibliophiles everywhere!
The Friends are so grateful to Blanca Larson and her staff at the Plaza Del Sol Mall for providing the space for the Book Sale. Twelve tables are filled with books and even more books are displayed spine up in boxes under the tables. Weeded from the library shelves or donated by folks just like you, the books are waiting to build your home library, help out a teacher’s classroom library, or even be recycled back to the next Sale!
Since I’m organizing this particular Book Sale, I am putting out a call for help. Frankly, the Friends are having a bit of a hard time moving the boxes of books from their storage shed at the library to the mall. Not to put too fine a point on it, some of those boxes weigh over 30 pounds and the Friends’ average age is…well…older than me! (I’ll be 58 on Wednesday.) Do you see the problem?
This year I want to try something new – moving the tables and books to the Mall on Thursday evening instead of Friday morning. With this change, a whole new group of folks should be available to help. Plus, we’ll have more time to set up and make the book display more attractive.
We need about four or five trucks and eight or ten wonderfully strong folks to match. Dollies are helpful, too. If we had that much help about 6:30 Thursday evening, I’ll bet we would have all the books moved by 8:00! If you can lend your strong back and arms, call me at 734-2701.
The lovely Friends usually take care of handling the money during the hours of the sale. However, we have discovered we need to recruit some younger Friends to help keep the books in order on the tables while emptying those boxes under the table. I know some of the Maquila Wives will be helping this year (thanks, Kris Reichart-Anderson!) But again, the more the merrier, right? Just call me at 734-2701.
While I’m thanking folks, I need to mention Mr. Price. For the past ten years he has been helping move the books over to the mall and then removing all the leftovers at the end of the sale. He has also put up the yellow banners on Veterans and Bedell to advertise the sale. What a huge help!
I’m looking forward to seeing lots and lots of you at the Friends Book Sale Friday and Saturday. You’ll be glad you did!
